Salt for Hair: Sea Salt Sprays, Scalp Treatments & More
Salt is a popular natural hair care ingredient, most famously in sea salt sprays that create beachy, textured waves. Beyond styling, salt can help with scalp health, oil control, and volume. Understanding when and how to use salt on hair prevents damage while maximizing benefits.
DIY Sea Salt Spray
Mix 1 cup warm water with 1 tablespoon fine sea salt until dissolved. Add 1 teaspoon coconut oil (prevents drying) and 1/2 teaspoon leave-in conditioner. Pour into a spray bottle. Spray on damp hair, scrunch, and air dry for natural beachy texture. The salt dehydrates hair strands slightly, creating grip and texture that holds waves and adds volume. Works best on medium to thick hair.
Salt Scalp Treatment
A salt scalp scrub can help remove product buildup, dead skin, and excess oil. Mix 2 tablespoons fine sea salt with 2 tablespoons olive or jojoba oil. Gently massage into wet scalp for 2-3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and follow with conditioner. Use once every 1-2 weeks. This can help with dandruff caused by buildup but should not replace medicated shampoo for chronic conditions.
When to Avoid Salt on Hair
Color-treated hair: Salt can strip color and accelerate fading. Fine or thin hair: Salt can make already fragile hair dry and brittle. Daily use: Salt sprays used daily without moisturizing products will dry hair over time. Limit to 2-3 times per week. Always follow salt treatments with conditioner or a hydrating product.
