Saltrado was founded on a simple principle: buyers in Europe, North America, and beyond deserve access to genuinely authentic Himalayan salt - sourced directly from the mines, handled by real artisans, and shipped with full transparency. No vague "sourced from Pakistan" labels. No middlemen adding margins at every step.
Where It Begins: The Khewra Salt Mines
The Khewra Salt Mines sit in the Potohar Plateau of Punjab, Pakistan, roughly 160 kilometers south of Islamabad. They are the second-largest salt mines in the world and the oldest operating salt mines in South Asia. Salt deposits here were formed roughly 600 million years ago when ancient seas evaporated over what is now the Himalayan foothills.
The mines stretch across 110 square kilometers and descend to depths of around 288 meters. What visitors see on tours is only a fraction of the operation - the actual mining tunnels extend for over 40 kilometers. Workers mine using a method called "room and pillar," which leaves large natural supports to prevent collapse and maintains the mine's structural integrity over centuries.
The distinctive pink and reddish hues come from trace amounts of iron oxide embedded in the salt crystal lattice. Different areas of the mine produce different color intensities - from pale blush to deep rose - depending on the local mineral concentration. Our sourcing team hand-selects blocks based on color consistency, crystal clarity, and structural integrity.

How We Work
From the mine face to your warehouse, every step has been designed for accountability and consistency.

Mine Selection
We select salt blocks from specific mining sections based on color grade, mineral density, and physical integrity. Only A-grade blocks enter our processing line.

Artisan Processing
Local craftspeople shape, polish, and finish each lamp by hand using traditional tools. Each piece takes 2-4 hours depending on size and complexity.

Quality Inspection
Before packing, every item is checked for structural cracks, surface finish, and accurate weight. Defective pieces are recycled into raw salt products.

Export Packing
Lamps are individually wrapped in bubble cushion, packed in double-wall cartons with foam inserts, and palletized to international freight standards.
