Khewra Salt Mines: Origin of Himalayan Pink Salt

The Khewra Salt Mines are located in the Salt Range of Punjab, Pakistan, roughly 160 kilometers south of Islamabad. Often referred to as the source of Himalayan pink salt, this mine system is one of the oldest continuously operated salt mines in the world.

Geological deposits formed hundreds of millions of years ago when ancient seas evaporated. The characteristic pink and reddish tones come from trace minerals, especially iron oxides, distributed through the rock salt layers.

Today, Khewra produces industrial blocks, animal lick salt, food-grade crystals, and decorative salt lamp blanks. Saltrado focuses on export-friendly product lines derived from this same origin.
